|I've seen a bunch of speedruns of this game and playthroughs of the various Yoshi's Island hacks, but it's been so long since I actually played the original Yoshi's Island myself.|
Got really high today and started replaying the GBA version of this.
I kinda like the look of the GBA version more honestly... this style of thick lines and bright colors seems to suit the small screen format better... and the sound quality is fine despite it being on inferior hardware. Some of it is actually improved, like the laggy cave entrance/exit noise doesn't sound as bad on this version for sure...
so far, I'm getting 100% on every level on the first try without any problem.
damn, I broke my perfect streak at 1-6... saw a weird 1up balloon thing after the end goal, and then a shyguy popped out of it and made me lose some stars.
I'm having such an easier time finding everything now compared to the last time I played this... after playing Wooly World and all the other Mario games, I have a much better understanding of how Nintendo designs their levels now, so I intuitively know where to go to look for hidden stuff.
there, I went and redid the level for 100 cuz that was a silly mistake... streak saved I guess
1-7 almost made me lose my streak but then I noticed a really subtle hint pointing to some off screen soft dirt that reveals a spring ball to a bonus area.
unlocked Bonus 1 for getting 700 points in world 1... then got perfect on 1-8 first try and unlocked Extra 1... saving those for later
2-1 is already considerably harder than anything from world 1 was.. it introduces koopas, falling block platforms that crush you and cut off access to collectables, sunflower enemies, and the first baby mario star area and the first poochy area. almost needed to use an item card there.
also I've been getting bonus challenge minigames every single level so far lol... I don't care about lives at all (already at 50), but they are fun to play while stoned
world 1 kind of introduced a few new things each level too I just realized... like munchers, chomp rocks, bandits, tap-taps... like right now these gameplay elements don't seem like much, but back then this was just as interesting as all the cool level design gimmicks in Woolly World.
2-2 introduces egg launcher clouds, baseball bandits, green plants that shoot at you and you can only stun them by ground pounding, and the mouse enemies that come out of holes in the wall and try to steal your eggs... the last part of this was a cave maze with a ton of those mouse enemies roaming around... at least they don't infinitely respawn like in WW...

2-3 is really hard to get perfect on... there's that switch hidden in soft dirt that shows a hidden pipe leading to a bonus room with the water blarghs and like 10 red coins...
this level introduces Gusty, the infinitely spawning condom enemy.. and some really annoying fast duck head enemies.
oh and there's an optional mole tunnel you can go in to get the key for an optional bonus game (these only give you items.. seems like I can only carry 4 items in the GBA version)
and the last flower requires doing a huge baby mario star run... you have to ignore the star run at first and go through here with yoshi to get some collectables including the hidden blargh room I just mentioned... and you have to kill all the enemies in the first part to get them out of the way and then let the star follow you for a bit so you can have enough time to make it across the mario blocks
... at least that's what I thought you had to do, but there's not enough time even when you let the star go as far as it can.. I think there's supposed to be more stars you can pick up along the path but I can't find them... I blame the GBA version's lower screen space. also looks like that last flower can just be shot at instead of doing the star run anyway... would've been able to find it myself with the SNES's screen size... or, I just realized now you can easily find/get that flower after taking the big spring ball up.
...yeah I don't get what the mario blocks here are about at all.. seems like they aren't required for 100 points.
2-4 was really fun... it seems like the castle levels are always the most unique in terms of level design and gameplay...
oh wait shit... I missed a flower! I have no idea where it could've been... streak broken.
390 points for world 2 so far.
I really like the difficulty curve in this game... it's harder than Woolly World (when trying to fully 100% each level in one try)... although YI is better about giving you more ways to fill up on stars.
The bosses are about the same difficulty as WW so far. weird, I remember the big boo boss and these levels in general giving me a lot more trouble during my first couple playthroughs, dying a lot and needing a walkthrough for 100%.. I've gotten way better at platformers since then. now I'm never dying at all unless it's on purpose, and I'm super-clearing stages on the first try.
played for about 3 hours during this very high nostalgia playthrough session
|2-5... this one took me so long to do while starting this high edible session... finally got 100 points on like the 5th try|
normally I'd just move on but... in this case like I knew where to look for the missing flower, and the missing red coin was only because of a runaway flyguy I didn't expect... and the missing stars were only because of the bandit hidden in the bushes... so I knew I how to 100% this level already... but after I started getting good at killing the lakitus right away, I decided to explore a bit more for hidden star clouds, and found a couple hidden red switches that open up some invisible coins (and an invisible floor underneath the dirt bridge for some reason), a bonus room with coins and spinny 3d platforms, and a star mario bonus room... none of these things are required for 100% they're just cool secrets you can find to gain 1ups.
2-6... wow, that first part is just a vertical soft sand shaft, with various side sections that loop back around to the shaft. I very carefully crafted staircases with diagonal shots so that I could go back up and make sure I don't miss anything... and it's really easy to run out of ammo since the only egg generator is right near the end of the section.
this next section is very open ended... like I have no idea which way the "progress" section is... there's a seemingly hidden path to the upper level from the beginning, and several other ways up to the upper level and a midring up there... but then it also continues further right, past some rotating spikes... leading to yet another way up...
okay at the first upper level, there's a bunch of red coins to get, and there seems to be a further way up by bouncing on a bat enemy... leading to the locked door with a bandit minigame... okay and then there's another upper path to the right, that leads to where the middle ring was... and another upper left path leading to a door... okay and the far upper right path to a prize above that upper door, got it...
oh and at some point there was a locked door I went through with a vertical chalkboard train tracks section... you can actually keep trying it until you get everything so that's nice
sheesh, this is a lot to keep track of... I'm really enjoying the challenge of 100%-ing this game while high
oh also this section of the level introduces little walking cannon enemies... if I recall, you can only kill them with eggs, and they'll just hurt you if you jump on them.
then a checkpoint at the 3rd section... just an easy platforming waterfall cave section with platforms moving up and down, and enemies that have their movement zone in dotted outlines making them stupidly easy to dodge... what
okay... next I'm in a water area with platforms that disappear when you stand on them enough times.
aw shiiiiit... I screwed up a boulder puzzle... I just bet that's how you get the last flower and last red coin I'm missing... maybe? but there seems to be no way to die in this 3rd section...
oh wait, I figured out how to die... let the boulder fall on me in the water and I get pushed below the land and into the fall zone...
erp, never mind... I misinterpreted what the boulder was for... if you stop it from falling and push it back up the hill, you get a hidden cloud with a 1up...
and another hidden cloud with a 1up behind the flower enemy (so yeah, there is actually a non glitch way to die in this level)
I have no idea where that last flower+red coin are... maybe in the 3rd section, but I didn't notice anything there so whatever... 86, next
2-7... lakitu's wall
this level introduces lakitu walls, and also giant shy guys that you can turn into giant eggs... in this game the giant eggs are only about the size of yoshi, and yoshi can only toss them a little way to crush a bunch of enemies...
lakitus in walls shooting at you from everywhere... again lakitus are very easy to take care of with yoshi even when there's this many of them...
an early upper section leads to a big area with more lakitus and eventually leads to a key that you can use to unlock the bandit minigame up there...
wtf, saw a weird flyguy that is flashing all the different colors, leading me up to a well hidden upper section...
then a couple lower linear sections through a couple doors and a couple pipes... then back to another outdoor open vertical/horizontal section... again a flashy flyguy helps point you toward a hidden cloud section.
oh man, this section is really confusing... it's both very wide and vertical and open...the actual way to go is left and then down right through the lakitu wall guantlet... here they are so spammy they actually do pose a threat... and they infinitely respawn I just noticed...
phew... took a while but I explored this whole area and got everything... now it's giving me a checkpoint in this next section where I'm already at 100pts... oh it's a driving section... doing good at it gets you to a 1up...

2-8 the potted ghost's castle
a slow rail platform section, with a podoboo chasing after you teh whole time..
found an optional pipe at the upper left of the spinny ball section... just a chalkboard train section with nothing but coins
this little crossroad sewer tunnel is cool... came from the top left... and there's a bottom left path, a bottom right prize, and an upper right path...
lol these shy boo enemies that drop bombs on you from the ceiling are so cute... they aren't even a threat at all if you just take your time, and they even help with certain puzzles
but combined with those fake sunflower enemies and some tricky platforming, it becomes kind of a neat challenge
got the key from this room, then went to the right, past where it introduces you to egg toll spike pulleys
next is another junction tunnel.. upper left is a prize, upper right is a tunnel exit, and bottom right is a door... first time I went here I figured the upper right was the optional way to go... and then I found a key and went through the locked door, which turned out to be the way to the boss... so I had to skip the checkpoint, kill myself and then come back here.
the bottom right door is a kill room with those enemies from 1-4 and the last flower...
more toll gates and platforming... then a spiny ball section with torns on the sides, but it gives you an egg block and a message block saying that you can destroy thorns with eggs...
destroyed all the thorns I could find... found a one up behind one of them.. and the exit door behind another one
the rest of the red coins are in this area filled with bandits behind walls you can't see through until you go through them... this place gets really frustrating if you try to destroy all the bandits... now that I know where everything is I can just grab the remaining red coins and get the key and get out...
then there's just some pots with stars/coins in them and the boss door...
this boss is extremely easy once you know what to do...
got 786 total points in world 2... bonus 2 opened, but extra 2 still not
3-1, the first monkey level...
some swamp area with muddy slippery ground
the unarmed monkeys just run away from you... it almost looks like they are trying to help you...
but then you get monkeys on vines that throw bombs down at you, and monkeys with watermelons that chase after you and shoot you...
and monkeys swinging off themselves hurt you... you gotta duck under them
introduces shielded spear guys, and unshielded dancing spear guys...
found the key early on in this level.. then later found a hidden pipe behind some tree that lead to some more red coins and the locked bandit minigame... that was REALLY well hidden, I got lucky
but no... that's not everything... I'm missing a red coin somewhere... I went all the way back through this last section but couldn't find anything.. but I did find a hidden red switch pipe leading to a poochy bonus room with plain coins...
aah... maybe i was supposed to check under the water at that poochy area... that'd make sense
water blahrgs everywhere... the eggs are very scarce... since the monkeys are afraid of yoshi by now
a helicopter section you can almost miss... er wait, was that actually the one-way path? damn..
then a submarine section...
these frog enemies... almost as annoying as the armless bandits unarmed bandits, yoshi can eat them too though
missing a bit of everything here, damn... only 70 points
time to kill a frog
3-4 - Prince Froggy's Fort
a lot of fish enemies here, but you can easily eat them.. also the unarmed monkeys here are different, they're like bandits now
this is a pretty straightforward linear castle level... all the side areas seem to be in doors along the path that obviously continues...
now I'm crossing the water in a bucket... I see that watermelon monkey up there on the ceiling... I had to cross back the way where that monkey is, and since I knew he was there I prepared for it with a locked egg shot.
then some really tricky platforming and dodging yellow droplet enemies...
kamek doesn't make the frog grow, instead he makes yoshi shring and then the frog eats him... this fight can be kinda tricky cuz of how the big shyguys come down without warning.. missing some stars on this one
another monkey level... some really tricky platforming over trees and water/pits, and some well hidden secret areas... found this one place that's just a bonus coin/1up rail platform section...
damn, was hoping the last flower would be there.. oh wait nevermind it's just in plain sight in the next section after this lmao

hedgehogs are jerks... not even egg shots kill them... boulders can kill them though
wtf this level... this is the most confusing level yet in the game... I was like completely lost... went through a locked door that ended up being the way to the goal. wtf

more water platforming with monkeys... it's a lot harder now though... and there's still a lot of really well hidden secrets
found a hidden red switch pipe leading to a submarine section with red coins
this section with the big fish that gulp you up is really hard... I'm guessing there will be a cloud that makes a bridge later to get these clouds about the fish infested water... nothing in those clouds except stars and 1ups though... just checked and realize I'm already at 100% hell yeah
3-8 - Naval Piranha's Castle
a sewer tunnel with some jelly monster blocking the way... takes a lot of eggs to get passed him... there's piranha plants flying freely through the pipes
it's only now just introducing you to skipping eggs on the water
that was pretty tough...
got everything... and it gives you a red egg/star farm opportunity right before the boss
this piranha plant boss is cool, you have to use the egg water skip trick you just learned and avoid his vines and stuff... I did pretty bad against him, but luckily it's very easy to make red eggs here and get back to 30 stars.

The challenge level has gotten really good now... this game is so perfect
|4-1 is an easy outdoor level with nothing new going on... just a lot more koopa enemies than usual|
4-2 is a lakitu cave level.. it's really easy to get hit when there's a bunch of these around.. it's mostly linear, but has a lot of vertical dropoffs and wide open spaces. this introduces the pow block that turns all enemies into stars, and also this one vertical falling section where you have to hover to collect coins, there's a really useful hint here that tells you what the magnifying glass is used for... it makes all red coins visibly red
4-3 is a very big wide open outdoor area... has limited step platforms and balloon platforms that take you up higher... a lot of verticality in this level... although later on I think the lower section is just a death pit.. it's getting to the point now where I'm getting ambushed a lot if I move forward too quickly... pretty tough... but so far I've gotten 100 pts on every stage in world 4
got the roulette wheel minigame for the first time... lol I'm at like 150 lives so far... lives are pretty useless in this game
4-4 marching milde's forte
I love how you can see like another level in the distance in the background, with shyguys walking around and stuff... this kind of thing is in Woolly World too but by then it wasn't as unique
got chased by a giant chainless chomp... then an inside castle area with a locked door and 4 different doors to go in, you need a key from each area I guess...
an easy rotating ball section
a lava platforming section (including a new bucket boating mechanic... the only challenge to it for now is if you don't eat the podoboo when you try to pass by it with the bucket, you'll get hit and fall in the lava
a section with spiky helmet bandits (you can eat them, they're whatever) and 3d flipping platforms... got ambushed by a snifit lol
a confusing loop around area with one way (jump up through) floors and cannons, snifits, and bandits... I think I got everything here
yep, got everything... marching milde boss is easy but fun... just keep stomping on him and breaking him into smaller pieces...
4-5 is really cool... mostly downhill slopes and switch bridges... to get 100% you need to push a chomp rock all the way through it and it's really easy to screw up..
aww.. broke my 100% streak here... somehow missed two flowers even though I thought I brought the chomp rock everywhere...
I'm noticing that pretty much the whole common theme of world 4 is using lots of koopas in every level.. except for 4-4 which had a bunch of other enemy types
4-6 is a level about cloud bridges and water.. introduces the idea of diving into the water a bit to go underneath some of the islands...
the 2nd part is an indoor cave with platforming over water...
wow, this one optional area is really confusing... a very wide open space with ball floating eatable ball platforms that can switch between left/right and up/down by shooting them... it's hard to tell if you've got everything, and you can easily fall into spikes and die
this 3rd water platforming/cloud bridge section is pretty confusing... the last few red coins and flower are kinda well hidden.. and an awkwardly places shooting piranha plant near the end (the difficulty from this might've been because of the GBA version's smaller viewable area)
4-7... a really fun rail platforming level... this level design is genius
4-8 hookbill the koopa's castle
this level is confusing as hell... I never know which way is to progress and which way is to stuff...
wow... found a really well hidden kill room for a red coin, shot a breakable part of the ceiling to get to it...
a tricky cloud staircase that requires you to follow a shell.. leading to a door that you actually NEED to go to for the key
what the hell... this lakitu with a fishing hook... wow what an annoying enemy... he's like the fishing boo from SMW except he can chase you vertically... you can eat or shoot them, but they respawn very quickly... I grabbed the red coins and got the hell out of that room
a fun little block breaking room right before the boss...
this giant koopa boss is actually kinda tricky to figure out his pattern... you really gotta react quickly when he's jumping toward you
got 780 pts in world 4... 4-5 was the only level I didn't get first try perfect
my general rule playing through this game is don't retry a level for 100% unless I know exactly where the stuff I missed is (no retrying if stars were the only thing I missed either)
introduces the lightning lakitus that throw aimed lightning at you... but you can easily eat them before they finish their throw.
and also the spikeball throwing enemies from SMB3 are in this
also penguin enemies... they don't directly hurt you, just bounce you around
the level design is a bit open ended, but also linear... found the key and the door to the bandit minigame, and a pipe leading to a helicopter coin collection room
there's also an icy cave section...
this level is really well designed... missed one red coin from a fly guy
first section is just pushing a snowball and crushing all the enemies...
next there's a really annoying/tough snow lift platforming section where lakitus constantly come right at me and knock me off right when I'm the least able to react to them, like if I'm aiming at a cloud or something...
it's easier if you push the hidden red switch at the beginning and the 2nd one after, that makes a red block bridge appear, but it only lasts a few seconds... this section was really hard... there's some coins you can only get while the red bridges are active, but none of them are red.. I went and backtracked for the red switches after getting everything else... it took a bunch of deaths before I got used to dealing with the lakitus on a small moving snow lift platform... and the flying penguins everywhere.. both of which infinitely respawn
the 2nd half of this level is fun... a bunch of unkillable snowman enemies that are just minding their own business, snowboarding and riding the snow lifts...
there's a lot of potential offscreen secrets you might need to hover to from the snow lifts I dunno, but I'm mostly just staying on them and trusting the level... it's pretty much just a tricky, linear scrolling small platform section... some of the penguins are hard to avoid due to the blizzard lowering your visibilty...
let the snow lift put me through the goal ring... what an amazing level holy shit
the first part of level has fire melons, and ice you can melt with fire breath... and water squirting fish... and bucket boating... and some tricky tiny carousel platforming...
so far this world is just constant 10/10 levels
then a baby mario star run where you pretty much die if you don't make it to the end... and a helicopter coin collection room, not sure if there are red coins here or not, but it lets you get back and try again by grabbing a penguin and bouncing off it... okay yeah there's no red coins in here
more ski lifts... just found out you can actually kill the happy snowmen by just jumping on them... this part is hard, I actually died here a few times, which is annoying cuz the checkpoint is way back at the mario star run part
it's really easy to fall below the point where you can possibly hover back to safety... I think part of the reason is because when you bounce off a snowman, you can't hover for bit until you start falling below where you were...
finally past that part... still no checkpoint... next is ice block platforming with penguins..
skiing section... kinda tough, it kinda feels like DKC3 style difficulty
hell yeah... got 100 pts on the hardest level yet... I guess it was technically first try, except I died like 10 or 15 times here
5-4 sluggy the unshaven's fort
this level has swinging ghost tonsil things.. and weird slug enemies that you can slurp up, or jump on to temporarily turn them into mush... but can't eat them
also these weird squishy/bouncy yellow things... you don't bounce very high off them, and you can stand on them just fine.. it just feels weird
wait what the hell... back at the beginning, there's a door you can go in, leading to a room with just a chained chomp in it, and nothing else... this is a pretty cool easter egg
this level is actually kinda hard... some moving platforms over spikes... and some criss crossing cloud bridges that look like one blocks out the other... how were you supposed to know which one to do first?
wow, this level is actually really hard... I think the bats in the later section are infinitely respawning... also there's like 5 different ways to go or something wtf
you can use the bats to hop up and take shortcuts, but it's risky cuz you might get ambushed by one of those tonsil ghosts...
uh.. wtf, I see a flower and some coins beneath a bridge... but there's nowhere to go except up the pipe to the next room... maybe it'll put me down there at some point?
oh shit this is one of my favorite autoscroll platform sections... the platform ghost..
died a bunch of times here, trying to get everything even though I'm sure I already missed something earlier, at least wanna see how much I can get first try...
oh and found out how to get beneath that bridge... you can just barely see the lower path from the seesaw
phew... made it to the boss. only missing 2 red coins
this slug boss is really interesting... it just constantly moves forward and tries to force you off the edge, and you have to shoot through its slimy body to its hard 3 or 4 times before it comes to that...
the goonie enemies... you can ride them through the air or eat them.. most of them can't hurt you if you are on the ground, but some of them carry shyguys and drop them on you
there's also fat goonies, and shy guys hiding in flowers... and flower enemies that shoot bubbles... wow... and it's like a completely different theme now than the first half of world 5... first half was snow world, 2nd half is like spring sky world
after that kinda mellow but still tough-ish platforming section, then there's an open ended helicopter section.. it's kinda hard cuz if you get hit by a goonie when you're not overtop of a platform you'll die
then a really hard moving platform section with shooting piranha plants all over the place... there's also a red switch/block run through this part that only rewards coins.. I got all the red coins but missing 2 flowers somehow
heh... I bet 99 lives at roulette and got x2... now at over 300 lives

a frantic but slow paced autoscrolling level with a lot of baseball bandits and lakitus, it's easy to fall off but I made literally no mistakes and got through this part of the level with 30 stars and I think all things collected so far.
the 2nd part is a non-autoscroll bridge section with fast running goonies everywhere. the zoomed out flock of goonies in the background looks really cool...
then it opens up a bit... you can keep going right along the bottom path or you can take the balloons up into the clouds and keep going right on the upper path, and there are certain pipes you can go in...
the top path sure has a lot of those condom looking ghost enemies... and insta death spikes... AND baseball bandits holy fuck what...
oh wait, so the bottom path is just a dead end with another way leading up to the clouds... dunno one that one pipe I could go into was about, but I found all the things...
first part has a bunch of wavy rail platforms, and raven enemies that walk around on tiny planetoids...
a fun bonus area with a falling platform run to a flower and a timed coin run on the fallen platforms
then a carousel platform area with goonies everywhere... more swirving moving platforms and ravens...
then there's a really tricky section where you navigate a big open falling platform maze...
died a few times here... was the restarting from checkpoint system on the SNES version always this generous? I'm used to Wooly World not letting you keep your stars when you restart.
well no it's not really much of a maze but it's very easy to screw up and miss your only chance and die
okay I see why keep messing up at the end there... I don't need that penguin in yoshi's mouth, with it gone I could've eaten the bullet bill and instead of trying to dodge it and losing the platform... no yoshi, get that penguin out of your mouth, penguins are not a healthy breakfast
sweet, got 100 points here too... that's half of world 5 super cleared
the first section is pretty simple... 2nd section, I can sorta tell from the background and from not seeing any sign that you can go down that you're supposed to go up... there's ball+chain throwing shyguys...
oh wow... this was an amazing 100% save... I killed the yellow bullet generator, not knowing I needed its homing bullets to get a few flowers/coins... then at the next 1-way door I saw one of those spinny ball platforms, and I was just barely able to grab it with my tongue without fully going through the 1- way door, and then use the ball to get the stuff I missed...
oh wait no, nevermind I already went up through a 1-way floor, damn
the raven boss is so much easier than I remember him being... lol the raven went back to being a constellation along with the boney gooney
missed 9 red coins and 2 flowers there... yikes

now the atmosphere is all dark and dreary... skeleton bones on the ground...
skeleton goonies... you can't ride on them

found an invisible cloud/invisible pipe that lead to a bonus area, where you just ride a slow rail platform and pass by dancing spear guys that are easy enough to avoid if you stay on the platform and don't get too greedy jumping for coins.
a bunch of easy platforming with clouds that make bridges that you don't even need. then you encounter the first flame guy enemy... and super dbz bandits that you can't seem to kill
then there's a repeat of the chomps that jump at you from the background and eat the ground when they fall, except they're a lot faster in this level.
huh... did the GBA version make it so you don't actually get hurt from touching the falling chomps? I coulda sworn that was a thing when I last played this game.
then a section where skeleton goonies drop bombs on you... there are some places you can get cover.

Bandit cave... exactly what the level says it is... with some bandits trying to run away with red coins... and some platforming over lava and fireball enemies as well...
next section... oh wow I remember these mouse enemies that steal your eggs... these ones have a skeleton head but the rest of their body is normal, almost like they're just wearing skulls
and there's bandits that hide behind a background wall layer and run out at you when you get close
some tricky cave system with green spitting plants and baseball bandits... a lot of star clouds around here...
then a star run section
epic 100 points finish
platforming across mushrooms, with spinny logs that are like the SMB3 spinny platforms... got hit by a fuzzy for the first time... it's easy to deal with if you just hover in the air a lot.
missing. fireball enemies added in near the end... missed a few stars and 1 red coin
wow this level is cool... the first section is a bunch of moving castle texture platforms, and fireballs and big boos, and introduces a big boo that has a trail of little boos... and 2.5d rotating fire bars...
woah wtf, the next section has a refight against that blob boss from an earlier castle
then a dark section with pipes that take you between floors... the 2.5d atmosphere here kinda reminds me of Wario Land VB
those mouse enemies are here, except these ones aren't wearing skulls, so they can see better and come after you.
there's a lot of pipes... I'm guessing the one blocked by a cork with a keyhole is the progress pipe so I'll just go into all the others one by one.
then after that pipe maze, a chill easy section with a carousel that dips into lava, and a log lava ride with almost no threats...
the giant tap-tap boss is easy, but fun... got 100 points here
a slow autoscroll cave section... wow what the hell, you have to pretty much know in advance where one of these red coins is gonna be.
it's not that hard, but there's like no checkpoints and lots of lava you can instantly die in if you screw up.
even when I know, that one red coin is still kinda stupidly hard to get, it's already despawned off screen before I can shoot an egg there... is the GBA version making this harder?
ok this level requires way too much patience to try and beat it while getting all the stuff while also being high and wanting to beat the game before the high wears off... especially that one part where you gotta ride the chomp boulder across lava to get to a door... screw that, just gonna focus on trying to get to the end.
missing stars, 6 red coins, and a flower
the most fun and challenging maze cave level yet... I thought I went everywhere but I'm missing 2 red coins, and some stars..
some chomp chase sections, 1-time use platforms, and a lot of fast moving rail platforms... the next is more of the same, but now there's this new background art here, it's like some really weird looking scribbled in stars/moon pattern.. you really gotta trust these red platforms.
aw, missed a key somewhere for the bonus game door
next is an outdoor castle roof section, with lots of bandits... I'm getting ambushed a lot thanks to the GBA version's smaller screen... it didn't really become apparent how much worse the smaller screen is until this final world.
oh well... stars aren't an issue since I've played so many bonus games I have tons of unused star cards if I ever have everything but stars at the end of a level.

I now have 382 lives going into this final level
first section is with helicopter yoshi... kamek sometimes swoops at you... taking your time a little bit seems like it'd be the best strategy, but not really since that means you'd have to go up and down to avoid kamek a lot more often, and you'd be more likely to get hit by the skeleton goonies... the best way is just to move quickly along the coin trails where you're safe from the goonies, and try to time it so you only have to move out of kamek's way when you have to move up or down to the next coin trail.
then there's a door roulette the door you land on is just luck based. I went in the 2 door... some easy section with stilt guys and spear guys... next section has some weird longface shy guys... another blob monster fight for the key... and then the slow autoscroll kamek section before the boss...
wow kamek appears and shoots WAY faster in this than in Wooly World... shit, died right before the checkpoint.
this time I entered door 3... got a bunch of easy red coins and a block saying "RUN AWAY! HURRY!", referring to the next room... a slow autoscroll room that slops up and down, with a giant tap-tap that jumps over gaps chasing you from behind, and bats coming from the front... that was easy
got to the boss, but missed a red coin in the kamek room because I was too busy dodging stuff...
giant baby bowser is really hard to hit when he gets way up close... it's easy up until you start making mistakes and then it gets harder the closer you let him get to you...
that took me a few tries actually... i'ts very easy to screw up and die on this final boss...
missing a ton of stars and 1 red coin... gotta remember to try doors 1 and 4 later.
